As a student at Washington College, I was able to take courses in a variety of fields. However, none have captivated me more than the courses I took in Sociology, especially those relating to social welfare and victim rights. I took a class my junior year called Victimology and my professor assigned me to work on a project with Mid-Shore Council on Family Violence. Along with four other classmates, I helped the agency plan their annual Domestic Violence Memorial Service that takes place each October at Washington College. I enjoyed working with the advocates at MSCFV, and once the memorial service was over I knew that I wanted to continue volunteering with the agency. My senior year I enrolled in the Field Experience in Sociology Class- a class in which students work as an intern for 8 hours a week in any agency in the community. I requested to be placed at MSCFV and began my internship in September 2010.

My internship at MSCFV ended in May 2011, just before my graduation. However, during the eights months that I interned at the agency, I experienced many important educational opportunities. The agency has taught me about the issues of domestic violence, including the cycle of violence, legal rights and restrictions pertaining to domestic violence cases, and most importantly, victim advocacy. While at Mid-Shore Council on Family Violence, I received valuable interaction with clients through one-on-one counseling, intakes, legal interviews, and court advocacy. Furthermore, it was beneficial to learn how to work in an agency setting that serves a specific client population.

My time at Mid-Shore Council on Family Violence meant more to me than an internship- it helped me grow as an advocate, as a concerned citizen, as a sociologist, and as a person. I will always treasure the lessons I obtained during my time with this agency. I recommend this internship to other students. It gives you insight to what a textbook cannot.

Name: Erika Riley
School: Washington College
Degree: Sociology /Minor Spanish and Gender Studies

My name is Erica Riley, I'm a senior majoring in Sociology at Washington College with a double minor in Spanish and Gender Studies. My goal after college is to work as a therapist with victims of abuse/rape/harassment/domestic violence. When we were presented in class with the internship opportunities I was greatly intrigued by the opportunity to work with MSCFV. As a lifelong and deeply devoted feminist, I have aspired not only to emulate but also to support the work of women like the ones affiliated with MSCFV. Supporting women in times of difficulty in contemporary American society is an essential part of the move toward a brighter future for all. In light of that interest, and of the pioneering leaders at MSCFV, I was happy to offer my services as an intern this semester.  I would highly recommend this opportunity to anyone who is interested in supporting victims, as I have been able to cultivate and channel my passion of victims awareness through this internship.

Best,
Erica

My name is Laura Lazenby, I am a senior at Washington College. I am majoring in Sociology with a minor in Anthropology and a concentration in Chesapeake Regional Studies. The time I have spent here at Washington College has presented me with many opportunities; one of the most memorable was my acceptance into the college’s new Chesapeake Semester program. This interactive program helped me develop a thesis topic.  I was interested in the guest workers coming to America to work and the mystery behind many of their lives. As I delved into this politically charged topic of immigrant guest workers, I uncovered a desperate reality of injustices many immigrant workers face while in the United States as well as their home countries. I have always been a huge activist for human rights, and equality. Through my exploration into the hidden nature of guest workers and their exploitation, I have become passionate about helping others find justice. When I was presented with the opportunity to intern at Mid-Shore Council on Family Violence it seemed to be the perfect fit. This is a great chance for anyone who is dedicated to supporting victims and learning how to help them in such difficult times.
