Learn how you can support a survivor of domestic violence

Know The Numbers

Share important emergency contact numbers, including 911 and the MSCFV 24/7 Hotline at +1 (800) 927-4673.

Safe Space

Provide a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment where the survivor feels comfortable speaking openly.

Confidentiality

Respect the survivor’s privacy and explain that confidentiality may have limits if there is a risk of suicide or homicide, or if a child may be experiencing abuse or neglect.

Listen

Listen attentively and give the survivor your full attention. Allow them to express their emotions, including crying, without judgment or pressure. Remind them that it is okay to feel and express their emotions.
Assist the victims with developing a safety plan.

Be Honest

Let the survivor know it is okay to feel afraid or unsure of what to do. Reassure them that the abuse is not their fault and that they are not responsible for changing the abuser or their behavior.

Empathy

Show compassion and understanding toward the survivor and their situation. Never ask why they stayed in the relationship or why they did not leave sooner. Instead, offer support without judgment and recognize that leaving an abusive relationship can be complicated.

Non-Judgmental

Respond with kindness and without judgment. Avoid making assumptions or imposing your personal beliefs on the survivor’s situation.

Network of Support

Encourage the survivor to build a support network of trusted family members, friends, coworkers, and others who can offer encouragement and support.

Seek Help

Encourage the survivor to reach out to MSCFV for confidential support, resources, and guidance. Remind them that they do not have to face this alone.
